Calypso European tapestry features Calypso, the mythical Greek nymph who lived on the island of Ogygia where she help Odysseus for 7 years to make him her immortal husband. Calypso was said to be the daughter of Atlas. Here we see her enjoying a day in the countryside with her helpers beside her. Odysseus could not bear to be away from his wife any longer and his goddess Athena asks Zeus to release him from the island. So Hermes the messenger is sent to tell Calypso to free Odysseus. She then remarks on how this was the reason why goddess's relationships with mortals are complicated by these kinds of matters, and she releases him and sends him home on a boat. Odysseus tells her she is more beautiful than his wife, however he wishes to return to her.
